African Renaissance, Africa Arise, Africa is the next great growth area are phrases that have been used to describe the potential that lies in Africa and the foreseen path of development. Africa is rising but are the Africans rising with it, is a question being posed. How will the Africans benefit from the transformation However, it has not been lost on observers and the record of actual events attest to the same that conflicts and behaviors of the inhabitants of the continent threaten to derail the expected progress and transformation of the continent. It is a continent at crossroads in its process of democratization, compliance to principles of best practices in governance, and exercise of legacies, impact and sustainable programs. The continents living standards, poverty levels, income inequalities, and unemployment levels are deplorable. Like the rest of the world, it is a region threatened with matters of environmental degradation and climatic change as well as expectation of generation next.
In observing the African scene one thing stands out and that is the need for quality and adequate leadership to steer the continent in overcoming all its challenges to enable the required possible transformation. It is said that there are many good ideas on how change in different aspects of life can be attained but what is lacking is the leadership to, guide the continent and its people in the right direction, take actions and execute plans with effective programs. This relates to efforts required in areas such as poverty reduction, food security, alleviation of unemployment, introducing trade reforms and maximizing on their benefits, technological adoption and innovation embracing the data age, adopting the right social values, promoting knowledge management and skills development, climatic adaptation and mitigation. Some of these aspirations are enshrined in SDGS and each country’s constitution and long term goals. Equally important is the fact that there exist many Africans with the necessary leadership skills and the knowledge that goes with it which individually and in a fragmented manner are not able to exert themselves and make an impact on the African scene. This amounts to a huge loss of human capital with a huge multiplier effect on lost opportunity to the continent. Apart from the leadership skills, the networking (networks) arrangements that are available and possible from these group of leaders is colossal. These networks when properly harnessed are able to attract huge investments into the continent both from the local and the international arena and would primarily also be used to solve familiar African problems and significantly develop the continent.
